New research shows that telling stories can work wonders with the general public, but may not be as effective with legislators. The article uses the social issue of early childcare and education.

The general public may prefer learning how inaccessible and expensive childcare system effect society and want to know which policy solutions emphasize principles of equity and challenge the opposition. Highly descriptive messages often saw better results.

Whereas, for legislators, it may be easy for messages to get lost in the mix, so taking the time to understand and engage with your audience, know their contexts and history, and identify allies will help you sculpt a core message that creates meaningful change.
