The first Policy Forum of the year provided an update on the current status of the FASD Respect Act and an introduction to a few new resources for policy advocacy. Read below and check out the full recording to see what you missed!
Legislative Updates
The FASD Respect has been included in the Senate’s SUPPORT Reauthorization Act, which passed through the Senate HELP Committee in December. It will now be sent to the Senate floor for a vote, marking the first time in twenty years FASD legislation bill has made it this far. The hard work of advocates like you made this possible, and the FASD United team is incredibly grateful to partner with you. The Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) has urged Congress to renew the SUPPORT Reauthorization Act, an encouraging sign that a vote will happen soon.
Constituents from Texas met with both of their Senators and three Congressmen in January. There was also a meeting held with a Congressperson from Georgia. HR. 3946 now has 48 co-sponsors in the House, and S.1800 has 11 co-sponsors in the Senate. The newest sponsors are Sen. Warnock [D-GA], Rep. McGovern [D-MA-2], Rep. Gottheimer [D-NJ-5], and Rep. Stansbury [D-NM-1]. Setting meetings with your Senators and Representatives is still vitally important, and we would love to help in any way we can. New Resources
Sample legislation for a state FASD Advisory Committee and a template for a Governor’s Executive Order to create a state FASD Advisory Committee were shared. Check them out on under State Advocacy and see who else is working on state level policy. To hear the full discussion surrounding these resources, check out the 18:45 minute mark in the video below.
